The Starý Smokovec - Hrebienok funicular railway is a key attraction and at the same time a practical transport artery for all tourists who want to get to Hrebienok. The cable car operates from Starý Smokovec, the tourist centre, and in less than 5 minutes it overcomes an elevation of 247 metres, taking you up to 1285 metres above sea level.
The cable railway began operating in 1908, making it a historical rarity in Slovakia. Since then it has undergone several modernizations, the most recent of which in 2007 brought new, modern carriages with greater capacity and comfort.
Hrebienok serves as an important starting point for many popular hiking trails, including hikes to the Waterfalls of the Cold Creek, to Zamkovského chata, Sliezsky dom or to Skalnaté pleso. In winter it becomes a centre for winter sports and is the starting point for the longest toboggan run in Slovakia. The cable car operates year-round at regular intervals.
This cable railway is a great option for families with children, seniors, or for those who want to save effort and begin their hike from a higher starting point.
